Your teenage years can feel like both the best and most stressful time of your life. Balancing high school, extracurricular activities, friends and events can seem overwhelming, yet exhilarating at the same time. It’s also the period where dabbling in makeup comes in full swing, and with that in mind, I want to share my best makeup tips for teens.

I didn’t have any makeup gurus to look up to when I was a teen. My mom and aunts are very minimal when it comes to makeup, and YouTube, beauty blogs, and Instagram either didn’t exist at all or didn’t exist in the way they do now. All I had were other girls at school, who were pretty much just as clueless as me.

There’s a lot to know when it comes to makeup and beauty, so don’t fret if you feel overwhelmed. If you’re on the hunt for fool-proof makeup tips, I’ve rounded up 9 beauty tricks every girl should know!

1. Simple Everyday School Makeup Routine by Brooke McNally

If you’re just getting into makeup and want a look that is light and not overdone, check out this tutorial. She uses a combination of foundation, concealer and blush for her face. And sticks to a simple eye makeup routine, finished off with a cat eye. This routine will keep you looking fresh and awake, and it’s quick and easy to do right before school!

2. Curl Your Lashes Before Mascara

Whenever I see someone curling their lashes with mascara on, I cringe. However, it’s not so obvious when you are a teen. If you curl your lashes when you already have mascara on, it’s much more likely to clump and ruin your mascara job.

Instead, use a curler such as The Brilliant Beauty Eyelash Curler to create voluminous lashes pre-mascara. You can even heat up the curler under your hair dryer (keep it to about 3 seconds and make sure it’s not too hot by testing it on your arm) for a better curl.

3. Don’t Forget to Prime

Priming your skin is one of the best things you can do before putting on your makeup. It sets a smooth base for your makeup and evens out your skin tone for a flawless canvas. It also hydrates the skin, while at the same time reducing oil and shine. The Smashbox Oil Free Foundation Primer is ideal for sensitive, acne-prone skin, so will work wonders for any skin type.

4. Makeup Tips for Girls with Glasses by uwodoo

It can be a struggle to figure out what makeup will look good with your glasses. This tutorial will teach you what makeup to wear under your specs, and even shows you how to accentuate your eyes. She explains the importance of keeping your face makeup simple so that you don’t have to worry about makeup caking onto the nose ridge of our glasses. She also shows you how to fill in your eyebrows and do your eye makeup to fit with your frames.

5. Moisturizing is Key

Moisturizing your skin pre-makeup is essential for a healthy, glowing complexion. It should be your number one priority as it keeps your skin from becoming dry and dull. It can also lead to more vulnerable skin as a good moisturizer creates a protective barrier. Without moisturizing, your makeup is more likely to look cakey and your skin may become tight and itchy.

For all these reasons, a proper moisturize is extremely important. If you have acne-prone skin (as most teenagers do) try an oil-free product such as Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturizer for soft, smooth skin.

6. Huge Eyes – 8 Tricks You Never Knew by Aly Art

The right makeup can make a huge difference when it comes to your eyes. Having bright, open eyes is the goal for most girls, and in this tutorial, she is teaching you 8 of her best tricks. She shows you techniques such as the best places to highlight with concealer and how to extend your eyeliner line to make your eyes pop. She recommends products such as MAC Eyeshadow in Quarry and Rimmel Scandal Eyes Mascara to get the look!

7. Eye Cream for The Win

Never underestimate the power of a good eye cream. Your under eye area is the only spot on your face that doesn’t create its own moisture, so it’s essential to keep it nourished. Without under eye cream, your concealer is more likely to flake off under your eyes.

Eye cream will make your eyes look more awake and less dull. Clinique All About Eyes Cream is one of my favorites!

8. Bold Makeup Routine for Teenagers by Shanice Slatter

Every girl needs bold makeup once in a while, whether you have a fancy holiday event or want to glam it up for prom night. This makeup tutorial is simple, yet makes a gorgeous impact. The bold lip and cat eye are very sophisticated and the gold eye makeup is trendy as it gets. Using products such as the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil and the Kat Von D Liquid Lipstick in Lolita, this makeup look is absolutely stunning.

9. All About Concealer

If your teenage skin is like mine was in high school, concealer will be your best friend. A quality concealer can help cover pesky blemishes and red spots that you’d rather not walk around with. Concealer should match your skin tone and be set with a loose powder such as Sacha Buttercup Powder.

Pro tip: Dab concealer on the spots you want to cover. It will work much better than wiping it, which will take away all your hard work. Blend with your finger and start off light. You can add more if you need.

These makeup tips for teens are key for a fresh, radiant and gorgeous look. Follow the tips and tutorials to step up your makeup game and feel more confident in your own skin!
